Bundle of joy
"The feeling I can't explain you need to be me and experience it in order to understand" these words came from a friend of mine as she affectionately cuddled her 'bundle of joy' overwhelmed by emotions. Even one of my most eloquent of friends could not find words. Most people will find rational reasons to delay or postpone their moments: to focus on careers; to wait for the perfect one; to be psychologically prepared or until the economic environment has improved. Until they eventually succumb.
Ancient Greek thinkers believed in the intelligible and sensible world that can be represented by humanity and human beings respectively. Humanity being a form is of nonmaterial essence, perfect and eternal. Human beings are particular, physical, imperfect and mortal. But human beings help sustain humanity. Perhaps it could be this contribution to eternity that people find fulfilling. Contribution to this continuum of life.
I ask myself: what if the 'bundle of joy' does not find joy? In this world there is suffering and imperfection too. I guess suffering is better than nothingness. The Greeks could have been right: Homer was blind so was Steve Wonder; Franklin D Roosevelt had polio and Steven Hawkins is paraplegic, yet they made something out of their lives. Nothingness is not an option since joy can only be found in existence.
I can’t find rational answers. Author of Emotional Intelligence, Daniel Goleman berates ‘rationalists’ who disparages emotional intelligence. He posits the two complement each other and both are essential. I have just read American singer Beyonce Knowels would like to have her ‘bundle of joy’. Some people are programmed to put the baby first; the survival of the human species has depended on it wrote Julia Lawrence. "Sisa before anything, I have a 6 year old daughter that I love so much"- I was once told on a first date. So that’s the bundle of joy.
